Bristol roads including Corn Street and Baldwin Street will be closed to cars for one Sunday each month from June. Acting on an election pledge, mayor George Ferguson aims to build on the success of similar schemes in cities across the world including Bristol’s twin city Bordeaux.
“I want to see a city centre that is buzzing with life and activity,” Ferguson said. “I’ve seen it working in Bordeaux on the first Sunday of every month, and in Bogota in Columbia they transform the street every weekend.
“Bristol city centre was designed to be enjoyed. With traffic-free streets and plenty of activity, it will open up a world of new possibilities for creative, active and organised groups and others to get out in the fresh air and show us what they can do.”
Ferguson has put out a call for dance groups, fitness camps, Tai Chi, puppet shows, street games, hula hoopers, on-street basketball, street theatre, local history tour guides, judo demonstrations, comedy acts, choirs, stilt walkers, circus, markets and more to use the traffic-free streets.
Public transport will be largely unaffected apart from limited bus detours, with Baldwin Street among the roads closed.
Dates confirmed for traffic-free Sundays are June 23, July 21, August 18, September 29 and October 20.
