Pub of the week: The Velindra

The Velindra’s position at one corner of the former Bristol General Hospital means that it will be all change for this pub over the next few years as the former hospital and filming location for Being Human is turned into 190 flats and 10 shops.

The pub is named after a steam packet ship that twice each day on the high tide would sail to Cardiff from an adjacent jetty on the New Cut.

A sign outside promises “real ale and a warm welcome”, although my warm welcome on a Sunday afternoon involved the pub football team singing about going fucking mental and that Matthew Smith is a wanker. A Christmas bauble also flew perilously close over my head.

There was no real ale in this former Ushers pub when I visited either, with three pumps unused, but there were bottles of Bristol Beer Factory’s Gold and Severn.

Weekly events at the Velindra are the pub quiz on Wednesday, Barry Walsh’s open mic night on Thursday, live music on a Friday and a DJ on Saturday.

It seems both individuals leaving comments have axes to grind !!!!
Shame as I found the pub to be welcoming with friendly staff and locals , the relaxed decor inside is a big surprise as you walk in with a equally well stocked bar with real ales and traditional ciders
I especially enjoy Saturdays when there is a varied selection of local dj’s and talent
I would say to anyone pop in and take a look to make your own mind up

Ive been to the velindra many a time and can only say good things. The warm welcome you get from the staff and the atmosphere of the pub is outstanding. It makes you feel like you’ve known them for years the way they make you relax!!

I used to go to the velindra years ago but stopped going for reasons that I will not disclose. Someone told me that it had new owners so I thought id give it a go.. I am now a regular customer! They have a great variety of drinks and offers and can say confidently that they do they best roast dinners around. For 5.95 it is a bargain.. proper home cooked delights.
All I can say to people is that dont be put off about what you may have heard go and give the velindra a chance cause you will be pleasantly surprised.. well done velindra
