The ancient tradition of apple rolling will be revived on Saturday, October 20 on the Christmas Steps as Bristol Cider Shop celebrates Apple Day. Apple rolling competitions will be held at 2pm for children, and 2.30pm for adults, with the chance to win a barrel of cider.
To commemorate this historic event, this week’s top-five Bristol favourites come from Pete Snowman from Bristol Cider Shop, who is in no way a fan of self-promotion.
Bristol Cider Shop, Christmas Steps
“Well I would say that wouldn’t I! We do have the best range of cider in Bristol though – over 100 at last count – as well as cider brandy and lots of other cidery things.”
The Orchard, Hanover Place, Spike Island
“The Orchard was named CAMRA cider pub of the year 2009 – and is the best cider pub in Bristol. Amazing selection of local draught ciders and great pork pies!”
The Apple, Welsh Back
“Cider? On a boat? Genius! The legendary cider barge serves up a great range of cider and award-winning ploughman’s. The quayside is the place to be on a sunny day.”
The Coronation Tap, Sion Place, Clifton
“A deservedly great reputation for live music, but is equally famous for drunken students and the eye-wateringly strong Exhibition, so potent it’s only served in halves!”
The Bristol Cider House, Surrey Street, St Paul’s
“Formerly the Surrey Wine Vaults, now happily converted to a cider house. Try one of their cider tasting trays – I bet you can’t get them all right!”
