De La Soul will headline this year’s Brisfest as it moves to Ashton Court for the first time. The hip-hop legends top the bill alongside Roni Size, Beardyman and Hawkwind, and more than 300 acts from across Bristol and the South West including Babyhead, Laid Blak and Dr Meaker.
New York trio De La Soul are one of the most influential hip hop acts of all time, selling millions of albums worldwide and in 2005 reaching a brand new audience by collaborating with Gorillaz on the single Feel Good Inc.
Taking place over the weekend of September 22 and 23, Ashton Court is the “spiritual home” of Brisfest despite it being hosted at the harbourside for its four years in existence, as it was formed out of the ashes of the sadly bankrupt Ashton Court Festival. The move will see capacity increased to 20,000 people with organisers promising a “bigger, better festival”.
There will be 11 stages at the festival, curated by programmers including BBC Introducing, Jelli Records, Nokia (Wi-Fi), The Gryphon and Remix at Colston Hall.
Brisfest director Poppy Stephenson said: “We’ve grown steadily since 2008 and we’re now in a position to make the big move to Ashton Court, and take the next step in terms of booking an international headliner.
“We’re also giving local acts – up-and-coming and established – the opportunity to share a stage, so to speak, with De La Soul. This enables us to showcase the best artists from Bristol and the South West by placing them alongside a big international act.
“We’re extremely lucky to have a diverse and thriving music scene in Bristol and we’re proud to provide a showcase for the talent it produces at Brisfest.
“Brisfest is an extravaganza of music, art, comedy, theatre and circus and it’s going to be an amazing party in September.”
