The Whiteladies Picture House could soon be lost forever, as it is only a few weeks until permission could be granted for the historic cinema to be turned into flats and a gym. This must not happen. Whiteladies Road is already losing much of its character and this loss could eradicate it even further.
If I had won the EuroMillions last week, I would have bought the building. Campaigners admit that despite making their feelings widely known and recently hitting 1000 signatures on a petition, “at this crucial stage one of the only ways to guarantee the safety of the building would be to have the full finance to purchase the building outright from the current owner”.
A spokesman said: “Over the past year we have been applying to national bodies and other fund givers to assist in this, but as yet we have been unsuccessful. At this stage we are open to suggestions and assistance on making this a viable opportunity for the project, and in turn the future of the Whiteladies Picture House, before it is lost forever.”
He added: “As always we are hugely grateful for the support and encouragement we have received from all corners of Bristol, and beyond, throughout the campaign.
“Please help spread the word, in any way you can, that this wonderful building should be saved, not added to the sad list of Bristol’s bygone cinemas. It’s not too late.”
