Summer is almost over. The nights are drawing in. The leaves have started falling from the trees. Time to look out your winter coats and tights. But don’t be too miserable because this weekend is the last Bank Holiday of the year, and as usual there’s a load of activities to enjoy in Bristol. Take your pick:
Old Duke Jazz Festival
Still free but this year unfortunately inside rather than on the cobbles of King Street, and on a smaller scale due to lack of financial support, the 33rd Old Duke Jazz Festival runs from Saturday until Monday, each day starting at noon. Acts over the weekend include Cass Caswell, Jazz Me Blue, The Baker Boys, Edenheight, Kirris Riviere Blues Band, The Robin Reece Jazz Band, Fat Man Swings, Eddie Martin’s Blues Band and The Blue Notes. www.theoldduke.co.uk
Party on the Hill, St Michael’s Hill
Taking place on Sunday, Party On The Hill sees the return of the annual street party raising money for Bristol Children’s Hospital. This year there will be live music, DJs, street dance, stalls and a special prize draw compered by none other than BBC Points West weather girl Jemma Cooper. www.partyonthehill.org.uk
Mini Big Chill Festival
The Big Chill bar on Small Street will on Sunday be the place to bring the joys of the Big Chill Festival to Bristol city centre. Expect live music all day in two rooms, with an all-day barbecue, games and prizes. In the main room, there will be bands and artists from around Bristol, while the acoustic Room will host 10 hours of some of the best acoustic acts from the South West and a three-hour open mic slot. www.bigchill.net/bristol
Thunderfest
The Thunderbolt pub in Totterdown hosts its own music festival for the second year, featuring bands including Phantom Limb, Emily Breeze, Yes Rebels, John E Vistic, The Bronze Medal, Archimedes and RSVP. There will also be DJs until late, real ales, beer garden and barbecue. www.thethunderbolt.net
