Bristol’s Big Day Out

What makes Bristol attractive, enjoyable and distinctive? That’s the question Bristol Civic Society will be asking this weekend as they celebrate Bristol’s Big Day Out, part of a national Civic Voice initiative which encourages us all to celebrate where we live.

Events have been happening all this week, including a guided walk around Bristol’s medieval walls,  but will culminate on Saturday, June 25 with a series of events happening across the city.

The main event is taking place in the Bear Pit in the middle of St James Barton roundabout (right). The Bear Pit picnic will see the area become an urban picnic and entertainment area.

The event will feature a series of acoustic music, speakers, performances, and entertainment.

A Bristol Civic Society spokesman said: “This will demonstrate the versatility of this space, and the variety of activities which could be hosted on a permanent basis.

“So come along from midday, bring a picnic, enjoy the entertainment, and see the potential of this underutilised space in the heart of Bristol.”

Everybody is encouraged to do their own thing on Saturday: take a walk, have a picnic or play a game in your local park. Several parks and residents groups are running their own events, including:

Troppers Hill. The Friends of Troopers Hill are organising a Music on the Hill event from 6pm. Bring food and drinks and enjoy a summer evening of music with wonderful views across Bristol.

Tynings Field. The Tynings Field Community Group present a BBQ and picnic in the allotments. Following refreshments, there is a planned nature walk to Horseshoe Bend.

Knowle West. Knowle West walkers are planning to use GPS technology to mark the outline of their parks and send in the results.
