When my younger brother James first visited me in Bristol a few years ago, he was thrilled to also visit Rocotillo’s on the Clifton Triangle. Not because of its breakfasts and milkshakes, the two things that this 1950s-style American diner is best known for. No, he was thrilled to sit where the cast of Skins had sat, for many of the characters in the first two seasons of the Bristol-based Channel Four teen drama made Rocotillo’s their meeting place of choice.
So it was with purely coincidental timing that my visit to Rocotillo’s last week coincided with the new series of Skins. Whether the new cast ever visit Rocotillo’s, we will have to find out. So far, they seem more interested about pointing guns at one another on desolate moors.
There was a mix of clientele when I popped in for breakfast on a Wednesday morning, not just trendy young things but also an old man in a flat cap enjoying a sausage sandwich in one corner.
Rocotillo’s is a bit of a blast from the past and a welcome constant in an area of Bristol that sees food and drink businesses come and go with alarming regularity.
There are colourful broken tiles on one wall, with another memorable feature a slanted mirror snaking around the corner of wall and ceiling, so even while enjoying my tremendous sausage and bacon sandwich with my back to the front door, I could still see the hustle and bustle of Queen’s Row.
The Skins location team know their stuff, as shown by the gorgeous footage of Portishead Lido in the last episode. But Rocotillo’s is not just a place for trendy young things to hang out, although for my brother that’s always what it will be known for.
