Coffee Beach

Colourful deckchairs on the pavement outside Broad Quay’s Coffee Beach on a cold autumnal day shows that this is not your typical cafe. No, they have gone all out here to trick your mind into thinking that you’re not in a grey Bristol but on a secluded desert island bathed in hot sunshine.

There’s some Hawaiian-style music on the stereo and a large photograph covering the entire back wall of the sort of desert island you only find in the movies. There are also tropical smoothies and frozen yoghurts featuring papaya, mango, pineapple etc just to complete the illusion.

Unlike most other cafes in Bristol, Coffee Beach has also got a late license. The coffee syrups sit next to the spirits behind the bar, which also serves beer, cider and wine.

Is your brain tricked into thinking you’re being bathed in hot sunshine? Well, no, but it’s a sterling effort nonetheless from Coffee Beach and good to see something a bit different being tried in Bristol’s cafe scene.

I went there and the coffee and service was okay but all the food was just microwaved and didn’t taste great :-(
