Preview: The Literally Tsar

Last seen getting into a muddle with his slides at Ignite Bristol 2, Paul Parry, aka The Literally Tsar, will be presenting an expanded version of his quest to rid the world of the misuse of the word “literally” tomorrow at the Polish Club in Clifton.

Bristol-based Parry – who on his Twitter describes himself as documentary comedian, occasional writer, quizmonger, rugbyist, charity fundraising events manager and cheese eater – is a very amiable presence on stage, as he gently guides his audience through a pet hate that many of us share.

Unlike most other people, Parry has literally travelled from A to B, a small town in Norway to a small town in Nebraska, and he has also literally been to Hell and back, also in Norway.

“The word ‘literally’ is in a dire state,” Parry says. “It has been stolen from us. By football commentators, by news reporters coming live from all over the UK. People are now literally thinking outside the box and literally drinking like fish. Football players are literally on fire, rugby players are literally built like brick shithouses.

“I won’t be tackling a challenging problem head on, I’ll be taking a bull by the horns. I won’t be playing football brilliantly, I will be playing football whilst physically on fire. I won’t be celebrating loudly  with a large group of people, I will be painting the town red. I won’t be trying as hard as I possibly can, I’ll actually be giving 110 per cent.”

The Literally Tsar will be appearing at the Polish Club, St Paul’s Road, Clifton on Wednesday, July 28 at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5 with £2 from each ticket going to WaterAid.

You mean “Even after his slides were messed with, he still managed to fill the theatre with laughter and deliver a clear, rich talk, all in just 5 minutes” ! It was more than enough to whet the appetite and many of that audience are going back for more – expect an evening of smart entertainment tonight !

A much better intro than mine, Kaz! I’m very much looking forward to hearing a longer version of his five-minute talk. Should be a fun night tonight.
