There are some events I thought I would never be part of. Being eight rows from the front at a Westlife concert used to be one of those things. That changed last night when I found myself in row H at Bristol City’s Ashton Gate stadium to watch a band who have sold 43 million records and whose 14 UK number ones has only been bettered by Elvis Presley and the Beatles.
You think you’ve seen it all? You obviously have not seen 10,000 Westlife fans dance to the YMCA while waiting for their idols to take to the stage. That song was so popular that the DJ followed up by another Village People number, In The Navy.
That’s when I went to the bar and was confronted by the prices: £4 for a pint, or £4.50 for a Pimms, gin and tonic, or tiny bottle of wine. Drinks prices seemed like a bargain, however, when programmes cost a whopping £15. This was after some fans had spent more than £50 on their tickets.
As befits a Westlife gig, there were key and costume changes aplenty. I counted four costume changes, a great achievement from the four men who looked just as comfortable in white suits as they did in black suits.
The only disappointment on the night was the lack of stools on stage, once as much part of a Westlife routine as brotherly bust-ups were to Oasis.
Here is a selection of photographs from last night, including the view in front of and behind row H:
