The Adam & Eve

Bristol is a very hilly city. Fact. And those hills are steep, as I found out when cycling the Bastard Hills of North Bristol ride.  They are so steep that Vale Street in Totterdown on the other side of town claims to be the steepest residential road in the country. Fact.

Hope Chapel Hill is one of Bristol’s infamous steep streets. It’s definitely a challenge to cycle up (although strictly you’re not meant to as it’s one-way) and your lungs certainly get a work-out when walking up it. How steep it is can be judged nicely from inside the Adam & Eve pub, which is perched on the junction of Hope Chapel Hill and North Green Street just down from Hope Chapel.

The Adam & Eve is a small pub, and like many in the Hotwells area one that might not have changed in any discernible way for decades. And that’s a good thing in my book.

I’m sure, however, that a generation ago there didn’t used to be wasabi peanuts behind the bar or art for sale on the wood-panelled walls, currently a collection of torsos, male and female, large and small.

Beers on tap when I visited were San Miguel, Hoegaarden, Leffe, Gem and Otter, with Addlestones and Stowford Press for the cider drinkers and 12 wines by the glass. Food is also increasingly popular, and there were several tables – all with tea lights on – enjoying hearty meals on Wednesday evening.

The pub was almost full with a good mix of clientele, which was great to see for somewhere off the beaten track on one of Bristol’s steepest roads.

After a closure of several months in the summer, The Adam and Even has re-opened unnder new management. New chef, new menu and Tuesday night the pub becomes a cinema with the showing of old films. The winter season started with Pyscho and on October 18 it’s the 1958 version of Dracula.
