There are two beds in Caffe Clifton, yes – beds. Quite an unusual addition to traditional café furniture, but they fit right in to a café with a delightfully quirky interior that also features small tables with velvet covers and a lampshade that looks like a jellyfish. All in a high-ceilinged, light and airy room that was once the entrance hall to the hotel upstairs.
It is posh, but with no airs and graces. This is a fun type of posh, with Balearic beats on the stereo when I visited on a Sunday afternoon and free newspapers spread out on the table to enjoy with their delicious cakes. My flapjack was amazing, and until the end of February the colourful cupcakes on the bar are two-for-one.
Boardgames, jigsaws and magazines are strewn underneath the old marble fireplace; and tea fans are spoilt with varieties from Attic in Redland. A book club has recently started up, and every Tuesday night they host a ‘stitch and bitch’ evening, where you can come for a knit and a natter.
The palm tree by the main entrance can look bizarre on a rainy Bristol day, but when the sun shines it looks right at home, as do the beds in one of Bristol’s coolest cafés.
