The Clyde Arms

It was pub quiz time in the Clyde Arms on Tuesday night, and I was there with quite a large group to support our friend Emily, who was quizmaster for the evening. She did a very good job, especially with the picture round on cheese and biscuits, which prompted big debate over what exactly a pink wafer is called (it’s called a pink wafer) and what the difference is between Red Leicester and Double Gloucester.

Although only a minute’s walk from Whiteladies Road, the Clyde Arms on Hampton Road in Redland is a different beast entirely from what can be found in most of the pubs and bars this side of town.

It is quite a traditional pub, with stained glass windows, a central bar, beer garden out the back, a television and big screen for live games, two pool tables and a dart board on which Justin Lee Collins practised for a Sky show called 180 about him becoming a professional darts player.

As with all of JLC’s challenges, it was a fun show (if you like the bearded Bristolian funnyman that is), with a great cameo from his three-year-old son Archie who helps his dad practise darts in the garage, giving him a few tips along the way. The video below of JLC in the Clyde starts when he has already had a few:

Adam was on that darts board earlier in the evening but came over to join us for the quiz, not that he should have bothered as his general knowledge is useless. Our team didn’t disgrace ourselves, however, and came a more than respectable fifth.

The biggest cheer of the evening was reserved for the team in second last, who won a bottle of wine.

With trendy wine bars and gastropubs now dominating the local scene, it is refreshing that pubs like the Clyde are still around.
